ECU Remapping FAQs

What exactly is ECU remapping?

It’s a software update for your engine’s control unit that recalibrates fuelling, boost and ignition maps. Done via the OBD port, it unlocks power that the manufacturer left on the table for global emissions and warranty reasons.

How much extra power and torque will I gain?

On turbo‑charged petrol and diesel engines, we typically see up to 30 % more bhp and torque after a safe Stage 1 tune. Naturally aspirated cars gain less (around 10 %).

Will a remap improve fuel economy?

Yes. An efficiency‑biased map and the extra low‑down torque mean fewer gear changes and lower throttle openings. Many fleet tests report 5‑15 % fuel savings when driven sensibly.

Is ECU remapping safe for my engine and gearbox?

We stay well within factory safety margins, log live data on a dyno and keep every original file as backup. If your car is serviced on schedule and is mechanically sound, the tune won’t shorten its life.

Is remapping legal in the UK in 2025?

Absolutely. Remapping itself isn’t prohibited. It must not raise emissions beyond MOT limits or disable DPF/EGR/SCR systems, and you must inform your insurer.

Will it void my manufacturer warranty?

Under UK consumer law, only a fault proven to be caused by the modification can be refused. We offer an optional warranty‑friendly “dealer mode” that returns the ECU to stock for main‑dealer visits.

How long does the process take?

Most cars are read, tuned and road‑tested in about one hour; some older ECUs take up to two.

Can the car be returned to its original map?

Yes. We store your factory file forever, so we can flash it back free of charge - ideal if you’re selling the vehicle or prefer stock settings in winter.

Do I need to tell my insurance company?

Yes. Any performance‑related modification must be declared. Most insurers simply adjust the premium to reflect the extra bhp; some economy‑focused remaps attract no surcharge at all.

Will my car still pass its MOT and emissions test?

A Stage 1 tune that keeps all emissions hardware intact will pass the 2025 MOT limits. We run post‑tune smoke and OBD checks before you leave.

Do you offer mobile ECU remapping in Cheshire?

Yes. Our IMI‑certified technician can come to your home or workplace. We just need a flat driveway, your key, and your car.

What’s the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2?

Stage 1 is software‑only, designed for stock hardware and maximum reliability. Stage 2 adds supporting mods (e.g., intake, intercooler, turbo‑back exhaust) for even higher gains and requires dyno calibration.
